THE XUANWU GATE
by HUANG Liang-Chieh

"The Tang was the greatest dynasty after the Han for its prosperous
economy, vigorous culture, powerful strength, and high international
status."1 Developments in
the Tang dynasty served as a forerunner for future events that profoundly
influenced China. They extended the boundaries of China through Siberia
in the North, Korea in the east, and were in what is now Vietnam in
the South. Tang Taizong, was considered one of the wisest emperors in
the whole China history. His father Li Yuan became the first emperor
of Tang after the fall of the Sui Dynasty. However, Tang Taizong wasn't
Li Yuan's oldest son. According to the hereditary system, which China
always used at that time, Tang Taizong wasn't the main heir of his father.
How did he become the emperor? It was all because of the Revolution
of the Xuanwu Gate.
